I get lots of questions pouring into our inbox on a daily basis, and I LOVE sharing information with you that will hopefully make your life a little easier. Today I want to bring up one of the most common questions I receive: what platform should I use for my website? This question can take a lot of forms, such as “My cousin’s brother Bob says I NEED Wordpress, but do I really?” Or, “several of my friends have switched to Squarespace recently but I’m not sure it’s right for me.” Or, “I have NO idea what I should do for my website—HELP!?” We hear ya! Today, I [hopefully] will pull back the screen a bit on what website platforms are, how they work, and which one might be best for you.

How do I pick a website platform?

First it might be helpful to break down exactly what a “platform” is. A platform is the service that your website is built on. For example, Wordpress, Squarespace and Showit are all platforms that you can use to build a website. There are lots of platforms out there and each platform has its own unique way of doing things. Some internet denizens might swear by one platform or insist that all the ‘cool kids’ are using one certain type. But ya know what? That’s not really true. Each platform has different pros and cons, so the key is figuring out which platform is best for YOUR business. Saying one platform is right for everyone is like saying that pencil skirts look good on everyone. You’ve got to find what works for you.

Picking the platform you build your website on is one of the bigger decisions you’ll need to research before you start your design process. You know your business, you know your market, you know what your clients are looking for, and ultimately you are in the best position to choose which platform is right for your business. In doing research, it’s helpful to think through these questions:

  • Do you need a shop with a lot of products?
  • Do you blog more than twice a week?
  • What’s your budget?
  • Do most of your clients use their mobile device when looking at your website?
  • Are you looking for a super unique, avant-garde design?
  • Will you need to be able to update the site and the design elements monthly?

Knowing the answer to these questions will help you pick the best platform for your needs and your business.
